Make Your Muscles Great Again

“The fact that you may regularly run, walk, play tennis or ride a bike is not adequate to prevent an incremental loss of muscle mass and strength even in the muscles you’re using as well as those not adequately stressed by your usual activity.”

·

With all of science pointing toward the benefits of strength training, I’m still amazed at how many of my fellow endurance athletes continue to overtrain in the pool, track, and roads. Here is a typical locker room conversation I experience at least once a week at my local masters swim club: “I’m having extreme shoulder and neck pain. Any suggestions?” “How many days a week are you swimming?” “Every day.” “So no days of rest?” “No.” “Are you incorporating any strength or flexibility training into your week?” “No, I am extremely fit and want to keep swimming every day but I am in so much pain.” “Hmm...have you considered swapping out a day or two of swimming for strength training?”

·

Dr. Marilyn Moffat conveys the importance of strength training as we age to combat the loss of muscle mass—otherwise known as sarcopenia—in a recent Washington Times article (click here for the whole story).

·

And a decline in skeletal muscle with age is not just a warning for the Baby Boomers and beyond…“It begins as early as age 40 and, without intervention, gets increasingly worse, with as much as half of muscle mass lost by age 70. (If you’re wondering, it’s replaced by fat and fibrous tissue, making muscles resemble a well-marbled steak.)”

·

Thrive’s personal trainers and community of athletes understand these key concepts and have taken the warnings seriously.

·

We have developed a 4-week Beginner Strength Training Series that is perfect if you’re new to strength training, rehabilitating from an injury, returning after time away, exploring the possibility of adding strength to your cardio routine, or just wanting to strengthen to make daily activities easier or even possible.

·

You will receive 1-on-1 direction and personal feedback from our professional trainers in order to find modifications to best help you reach your potential. Each class will introduce you to a new set of total-body exercises and then its application through correct movement and technique. Our low impact, high intensity classes mean you’ll burn fat and build muscle while placing less stress on the body + reducing the risk of injury.

·

Our next 4-week series kicks off on Tuesday, October 9th! Get up to 3 strength training classes every week during the 4-week series for only $119 (new athletes only)! You choose your preferred class times. Our small class sizes will sell out.
